Everything You Need to Know About Tina Fey’s ‘One Night Only’

It’s been almost nine months since any Broadway show took to the stage — which is why we are so excited for Tina Fey’s One Night Only: The Best of Broadway TV special to reach our living rooms this Thursday. The two-hour broadcast will no doubt be a spirit-lifter for industry professionals and theater fans alike. In anticipation of this much-needed blast of sunshine, here’s everything you need to know before you tune in.

It is raising money for Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS.

Normally over the holiday season, Broadway makes a push for donations to this important organization. At the end of nearly every performance, a designated cast member makes an announcement to the audience encouraging donations and offering an assortment of goodies in exchange. Obviously, since there are no performances right now, there is also no opportunity to collect that cash, so this broadcast is hoping to fill some of that gap. “I’m so happy to be a part of this night, raising money for Broadway Cares, and to watch these mega talented people do what they do best,” Tina Fey stated.

“We are deeply grateful to NBC for making this special evening possible and to the spectacular lineup of Broadway’s best who are so generously sharing their time and talent,” Tom Viola, the executive director of Broadway Cares, added. “The joy that this special will create will translate into meals and medication, health and hope for those within our Broadway community who are struggling during this pandemic and extraordinary work shutdown.”

Six shows that were running before the shutdown will perform…

Taking advantage of this opportunity to get in front of potential (future) ticket buyers, six shows that were running  at the time of the shutdown will perform. These include Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations, Jagged Little Pill, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Chicago, Diana: A New Musical, and Fey’s very own Mean Girls. While nothing is guaranteed, participating in this special is a good indication that these are shows planning to return when Broadway does.

Plus two fan favorites.

In addition to the six current shows, One Night Only will include performances by Jersey Boys (which had been playing off-Broadway at New World Stages at the time of the shutdown) and RENT — so even if you haven’t been to New York City in some time, there should still be something in this TV special for you(!)

It has a seriously starry lineup.

Tina Fey is bringing out the big guns for this one. The guest list includes Broadway royalty such as Annaleigh Ashford, Leslie Odom Jr., and Aaron Tveit, plus a blitz of other stars who all love the Great Bright Way, and many of whom have taken their turn on the stage. Among those expected are Sutton Foster, Kelly Clarkson, Lance Bass, Kristen Bell, Patti LaBelle, Ron Cephas Jones, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Josh Groban, Jake Gyllenhaal, Sean Hayes, Nathan Lane, Alanis Morissette, Billy Porter, Mary-Louise Parker, and John Stamos.

Oh, and did we mention Barbra Streisand?

She’s gonna be there too.

One Night Only: The Best of Broadway airs Thursday, December 10 from 8-10pm ET.
