Channing Tatum and Scooter Braun are set to produce a YA musical about Lady Macbeth. The Magic Mike star and the record exec will join forces with director John McPhail, screenwriter S.J. Inward and Amazon Studios. We aren’t sure what to make of it yet but we’re kind of into it anyway…?
S.J. Inwards is an up-and-coming screenwriter who won the Academy and Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting for her 2017 sci-fi screenplay Jellyfish Summer. The director, John McPhail, gained recognition for his zombie musical film Anna and the Apocalypse which was nominated for an Audience Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2018. Tatum is no stranger to dancing, singing or producing as he was the producer for the Magic Mike musical, as well as starred in the film.
This Lady Macbeth musical will be, as I’m sure you’ve guessed, based on the William Shakespeare character from his play Macbeth. Her husband, the titular character, is a Scottish general who murders his way to become the King of Scotland. Lady Macbeth stands by his side all while calculating and pushing her husband to fulfill the witches’ prophecy that he will one day be king. (If you have not read this Shakespeare play, we suggest you do!)
Details of the full plot of this new spin on the classic tale have not been released yet, but we do know the story will focus on a teenage girl who struggles with her morality as she faces the consequences of her ambitious choices. Apparently, Lady Macbeth was just as ambitious as a teenager as she one day would be as an adult.
Amazon had no comment because they are secretive like that, but we look forward to learning everything there is to learn about this upcoming musical!
