Tony Nominations 2019: Something for Everyone, Except Aaron Sorkin

04.30.19

BY: LIZ DURAND STREISAND

There is something for everyone in this year’s mix of Tony nominees. While the hip, downtown musical Hadestown clocked the most nominations (14 total), the classic jukebox musical Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations came in a close second (12 total). Other front-runners are Tootsie (with 11 nominations), The Ferryman (with 9), and Beetlejuice (with 8). Rounding out the Best Musical category is The Prom (which earned 7 total nominations).

While some years feel like more of a coronation (Hamilton in 2016; Dear Evan Hansen in 2017), 2019 is just about anyone’s game… well, anyone except Aaron Sorkin. His rendition of To Kill a Mockingbird was notably shut out of the Best Play category despite critical raves and a record-breaking run.

Start prepping your ballots now… and a friendly reminder that every Tony-nominated show named below is in play at Broadway Roulette!
