One of the best things about being a female entrepreneur is meeting other female entrepreneurs — like Nicole Parker King of Jet Set Candy. ICYMI, Jet Set Candy is collectible travel jewelry that’s stylish, playful, and clever (like you!). Because no trip to New York City is complete without seeing a Broadway show, it was high time Jet Set Candy added a Broadway charm to the mix… and so they did! Over a recent lunch, I had the chance to chat with the Creator-in-Chief about the inspiration for her business, what she loves most about NYC, and why you can never really be your mom’s boss.
Broadway Spin: How did you get the idea for Jet Set Candy?
Nicole Parker King: I love to travel and I was always going to different countries. I’ve been to over 50! And one time I was in Sri Lanka and I saw these t-shirts that had the native script on them and I couldn’t find them anywhere. The local kids were wearing them, but anything that was in the tourist shops was just really generic and not special — the t-shirts there looked like you could have been in Hawaii [no shade to Hawaii!]. But being unable to find something to take home, I thought, “There should be a brand that creates collectible travel souvenirs.” Jewelry seemed like a great match because it’s inherently collectible, it’s travel-sized, and it lasts forever.
BS: And then you recruited your mother?
NPK: She was working in luxury travel PR. She had a job at an agency, but she was already doing so much for Jet Set Candy — she was coming in and working our pop up shops after her day job and I was like, “Just come work here full-time.”
BS: And now you’re her boss.
NPK: (Laughs) The reality is, there’s no such thing as being the boss of your mother. But it’s great. While it’s not all rainbows, we do have a lot of fun and she’s naturally the best cheerleader and the best salesperson for the business.
BS: What’s one of your favorite places you ever traveled to?
NPK: I lived in India for three years and now India really does have a piece of my heart.
BS: And now you live in New York! What do you love about this city?
NPK: It’s impossible to be bored even for one second in New York. It’s definitely not for everyone, but for people who like stimulation, there’s no better place on the planet.
BS: And what are some of your must-do recommendations for people visiting for the first time?
NPK: Definitely take a walk on the High Line and check out the original Shake Shack in Madison Square Park — not the other ones, the original one. Even the building it’s in is cute.
BS: And your favorite Broadway show?
NPK: It’s so cliche, but Hamilton was the most amazing show I’ve ever seen. I also really, really loved The Book of Mormon.
