How Jeremy Jordan Broke the News of His ‘Supergirl’ Exit to Melissa Benoist

Can you bring the magic of Broadway to the movie theater? Bandstand is going to try! On Monday, June 25, and Thursday, June 28, the beloved musical is hitting the big screens in more than 700 U.S. movie theaters, courtesy of Fathom Events (and you can get tickets here). Broadway Spin caught up with Supergirl mainstay (and former Newsies star) Jeremy Jordan at the “Bandstand: The Broadway Musical on Screen” premiere at the SVA Theatre.

ICYMI: Jordan has been starring in Supergirl, opposite Melissa Benoist, since 2015. Interestingly, Benoist is now performing as Carole King in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, and Jordan just announced that he is taking a break from their TV show, possibly to pursue theatre instead.

Jordan was clearly excited about the crossover of Broadway shows to the big screen. (In addition to Bandstand, Newsies is hitting the movies.) Asked how it was for him to see himself on the silver screen, he didn’t miss a beat. “It’s cool, because I’ve done a lot of film and TV and they always cut stuff and trim stuff, and it’s cool to see the whole thing, the little nuances that you miss on stage,” the 33-year-old actor explained, adding that he is more comfortable on stage than on set. “You have the energy of the audience. You’re more prepared—and you’re living in it,” he noted.

Perhaps that’s why he is doing (almost!) the unthinkable and walking away, at least temporarily, from a regular role on a hit TV show—a decision he announced on Instagram. “I came to LA three and a half years ago searching for a new adventure, and in a matter of weeks, I was best friends with a super hero [i.e. Melissa Benoist],” he began. He went on to call the experience “the adventure of a lifetime” before explaining that something was still missing. “Lately, my gut has been telling me that I’m once again ready to begin a new chapter in my life… and if I’ve learned anything, it’s that you gotta listen to your gut.”

As for what this new chapter is, though, Jordan isn’t sure. “Oh, I don’t know. That’s the great thing,” he mused to Broadway Spin. “I don’t know.” He did, however, confirm that he is back in New York, full-time.

And in case you’re wondering, he didn’t just spring the news on Benoist and the rest of the Supergirl team out of the blue. “They all kind of knew about it for a while,” he replied. “So that helped.” We like to think that he and his former co-star will reunite in NYC soon—maybe even on the Great White Way!

Melissa Benoist currently stars in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical and tickets are in play through Broadway Roulette.
